Inflatable Systems
Airborne Systems has been involved with various inflatable projects starting with production of thousands of BSU-85 Air Inflatable Retarders in the 1960’s to the present time.
Airborne Systems is also heavily engaged in the study of Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerators (IADs) and has analyzed a range of concepts including supersonic decelerators for high mass (60 MT) Mars Landers for NASA JSC.
Current activities include concept designs for the NASA LaRC Inflatable Re-Entry Vehicle Experiment (IRVE-3). We have also analyzed systems for a range of inflatable decelerators for Aerocapture at Titan and Mars (ISP-MSFC) and high mass hypersonic and supersonic decelerators. As part of the HMMES program for NASA LaRC we fabricated examples of tension-core and stacked tori types of IADs using our proprietary manufacturing technology for seamless braided inflatable structures. ASNA maintains full capabilities including design, analysis, simulation, fabrication, and testing.
